Abstract(s)
Epigraphic evidence, particularly epitaphs, provides demographic documentation concerning individuals who resided in the province of Lusitania during the Roman Imperial period. In demographic studies, epigraphic evidence constitutes a significant resource, offering data on the age and origin of these individuals. Inscriptions frequently record the deceased's age and sometimes their place of origin to indicate that the individual was interred far from their homeland. This dissertation aims to explore the demographic aspects of the province of Lusitania by focusing on information extracted from Latin inscriptions, particularly funerary ones. Utilizing the epigraphic documentation, which is relatively abundant and accessible, this study examines mortality and population movements that characterized the province during the Roman Imperial period, considering variables such as gender and socioeconomic status of the individuals. This documentation allows for the elucidation of various aspects, including age at death, life expectancy, origin of individuals, and population mobility, thereby offering a comprehensive understanding of the demographic context of the region.
