The emotional system works as an indicator for the vital psychological needs, which are responsible for the psychological well-being/distress, symptomatology and psychopathology. Therefore this study analyses the contribution of the emotional regulation on the regulation of psychological needs satisfaction and also on the psychological well-being/distress and symptomatology. This is a quantitative study composed by a non-clinical online sample and a clinical sample with patients from the psychiatric department. The results from the non-clinical sample show that the emotional process and regulation predict the regulation of psychological needs satisfaction and by interaction with these variables predict psychological well-being/distress and symptomatology. The clinical sample results show that the difficulties of emotional regulation predict the regulation of psychological needs satisfaction and this relates with the psychological well-being. The regulation of psychological needs satisfaction in interaction with the difficulties of emotional process and regulation predict psychological distress. The symptomatology is explained by the difficulties of emotional process and regulation. In conclusion is possible to say that the regulation of psychological needs satisfaction and emotional regulation can predict the differences between samples and the differences founded in the psychological well-being and symptomatology. This study is relevant for the case conceptualization and clinical judgment focused on the patient’s characteristics and needs.
