The growing number of people with dementia poses new challenges to the institutions that receive and take care of the elderly, and to their formal caretakers. Taking care of people with dementia is therefore associated with high levels of work dissatisfaction, due to the great dependency and frequent behavioral disturbances that go with the disease and can be found in people with dementia. Dementia in the elderly population, poses new problems and challenges that calls into question the effectiveness of the scarce existing public policies in Portugal addressed for these subjects. The main goals of this investigative work are to identify the dementia know-how and the way to acquire it, explore professional caring practices applied to people with dementia, analyze constraints and difficulties to the professional intervention directed at people with dementia, analyze the learning process and the personal development as a consequence of working with people with dementia and identify the support or optimal resources needed to guarantee a better quality of the professional action provided to people with dementia. In this qualitative type study, a non-probabilistic sampling by convenience will be used and interviews will be conducted to formal and multidisciplinary caretakers of elderly people with dementia employed in a IPSS – Social Solidarity Private Institution, with social services in the ageing population. The results we hope to obtain are indicators of the need to develop action and training programs that are integrated in institutions and will highlight contents that can be used to improve the quality of the professional care of people with dementia (independent of their age).
