In recent research whithin the field of Curricular Theory and Development, some authors, such as Michael W. Apple (1997), have drawn their attention towards the need of deeper reflection on one of the most common curricular instruments, the school text book. In fact, there are not so many studies focusing on the elaboration and selection of school text books. This study intends to offer a contribution on this field. Based upon the analysis of the infant character, described on the Portuguese Language text books for grades one to four of basic education, in two different historical moments: during the Estado Novo and nowadays. It conducts a theoretical analysis around the concepts of socialization and social learning through models, and crosses its findings with research that has studied the curriculum and the manual as cultural products. It is intended to show, based on the analysis of the different infant characters described on the sample of eight Portuguese Language text books for the basic education, the reconstruction of social models of behavior and relationship as shown by the texts. This study will try to suggest some lines for further investigation mainly intended to be developed for teacher’s training.
