The development of the global economy and the fostering of competitiveness have given rise to two distinct but directly related points of view regarding the organizational world. On the one hand, organizations have begun to seek out people with distinct technical knowledge and cross-cutting skills; and on the other hand, the professionals take on their role more actively and feel responsible for the construction of their career and the development of skills that guarantee their employability. However, this relationship may be moderated by the expectations that individuals have regarding their professional success. The objective of the present study is inserted in this context and aims to analyze the moderating effect of expectations of career outcomes in the relationship between soft skills and career development. To identify the existing relationships between the variables under study, a quantitative methodology was used, and it was implemented through the application of three questionnaires that referred to career outcome expectations, career growth scale and soft skills attributes. To study this relationship, data was collected from 100 higher education students in the area of HRM in Portugal. The results showed that the competencies with the greatest significant impact on career development are the personal relationships and the extrinsic expectations of the results.
