Drug dependency has been acknowledged as one of the biggest problems that contemporary societies face, which reveals the importance of developing effective therapeutic interventions. Many faith based organizations have taken the lead in the fight against this plague, currently reaching out to numerous individuals all over the world, and the programs these organizations offer generate ripe scenarios in which users can attain more than just drug independence. The spiritual/religious nature of faith based programs, like Teen Challenge's, shows their catalytic potential for enriching their users' lives beyond the desired freedom from addictions. In the meanwhile, the high rates of users who abandon all types of rehabilitation programs prematurely, seriously thwarts their chances of attaining a stable recovery, leading to the interest exposed in this study on understanding which factors influence addict's effective retention in Teen Challenge's rehabilitation program, and in how the program's inherent spirituality deters or facilitates that retention. To investigate this association, semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informers from three groups: Teen Challenge's program's current users, ex-users for whom the program was successful, and staff. All participants indicated spirituality/religiosity and motivation as factors influencing effective program retention. It is hoped that this preliminary study will stimulate future research on this topic, therefore allowing for the enhancement of this institution's interventions, contributing to the clarification of the correlation between spirituality/religiosity and the recovery from addictions, and inspiring similar studies in identical contexts.
