O envelhecimento populacional tem sido uma tendência do século XXI e é uma realidade que exige
adaptação para permitir que esta população tenha qualidade de vida. Perante este paradigma, torna se essencial promover o conceito de “Envelhecimento Ativo” que consiste no processo de
otimização das oportunidades para a saúde, promovendo uma vida social ativa, equilibrada e
saudável.
Os Dispositivos Médicos desempenham um papel fundamental para a concretização de um
Envelhecimento Ativo, proporcionando soluções inovadoras para o diagnóstico, a prevenção, a
monitorização, o prognóstico e o tratamento ou a atenuação da doença.
Para além dos dipositivos médicos já utilizados na prática clínica, têm surgido, em resultado da
evolução tecnológica e digital, novos dipositivos que oferecem soluções mais avançadas para o
tratamento e a monitorização de doenças crónicas.
Existem algumas oportunidades e desafios inerentes ao uso destes dispositivos que devem ser
analisadas e discutidas de modo a solucionar e melhorar a sua utilização por parte dos idosos.
Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho consiste em analisar em que medida os dispositivos
médicos podem contribuir para um Envelhecimento Ativo em especial, nas áreas de maior
necessidade de intervenção.
A utilização de dispositivos médicos para a promoção de um Envelhecimento Ativo tem
contribuído significativamente para uma melhoria na qualidade de vida dos idosos. Através das
novas tecnologias, de dispositivos de controlo de monitorização, de tecnologia assistida e de auxílio
na mobilidade proporcionam uma maior autonomia, segurança e bem-estar.
Para além da introdução de conceitos e exemplos de dispositivos médicos utilizados nas condições
mais comuns ao processo de envelhecimento, como a área cardiovascular, neoplasias malignas,
doenças que afetam os órgãos dos sentidos e áreas respiratórias, são também mencionados
dispositivos médicos inovadores que contribuem para o bem-estar nesta faixa etária, assim como
as oportunidades e desafios inerentes a estes.
Adicionalmente, este trabalho apresenta algumas considerações futuras, que podem determinar a
continuação da investigação, da formação e da proteção dos idosos, de modo a realizar o potencial
dos dispositivos médicos na promoção de um Envelhecimento Ativo.
Population ageing has been a characteristic trend of the 21st century and is a reality that requires some adaptation to enable this generation to enjoy quality of life. Faced with this paradigm, it is essential to promote the concept of "Active Ageing", which consists of the process of optimising opportunities for health and activating social life in order to promote a balanced and healthy life. Medical devices play a fundamental role in realizing Active Ageing, providing innovative solutions for the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, prognosis, and treatment or mitigation of disease. In addition to the medical devices already used in clinical practice, new devices have emerged as a result of technological and digital developments, offering more advanced solutions for the accessibility and monitoring of chronic diseases. There are some opportunities and challenges inherent in the use of these devices that should be analyzed and discussed in order to solve and improve their use by the elderly. In this context, the aim of this work is to analyze the extent to which medical devices can contribute to Active Ageing, especially in the areas where intervention is most needed. The use of medical devices to promote active ageing has made a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of the elderly. Through new technologies, monitoring control devices, assistive technology and mobility aids, they provide greater autonomy, safety and well-being. Besides introducing concepts and examples of medical devices used in the most common conditions of the ageing process, innovative medical devices that contribute to the well-being of this age group will also be mentioned, as well as the opportunities and challenges inherent to them. In addition, this work presents some future considerations, which may determine the continuation of research, training and protection of the elderly, in order to realize the potential of medical devices for promoting Active Ageing.
