This project work proposes a product that stimulates people with autism through sensory design. I intend with this research to demonstrate not only the importance of sensory design, but also of inclusive design, as well as the influence that design has on the human brain. By studying how the senses react, I aim to have a better understanding of the importance that design can have in everyone's lives. By carrying out this project, I intend to propose a customizable product for people who have sensory problems, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder. People with this condition see the world differently, therefore shapes, colours, textures, smells, flavours are especially important. Additionally, as the product is customizable, it can have a broader reach and cover all demographics in society. My investigation in this project work begins with the study of the autism spectrum, in which I provide a comprehensive review of the main factors associated with this condition. Subsequently, I carry out a study to compare the senses of human beings and the senses of people with autism spectrum disorder to understand the main sensory differences. In chapter IV, I investigate the relationship between design and the human mind to understand the influence that design has in the eyes of the human being. Then, in chapter V, I conduct an investigation on sensory design, as it is pertinent to the creation of a product that stimulates the senses. Based on this part of the study, I aim to establish the connection between sensory design and autism to better inform the last chapter - product creation. In this last chapter, I elaborate on the concept behind the idea and on the relevance of having a product with this capability. The construction of the idea is then illustrated and tested with examples of practical applications, in order to better understand the practical potential of the proposal.
