Resumo(s)
The aim of this study is that the Landscape Architect, who is going to make a project to improve the
green spaces to be used by people with special needs, applies a methodology of approaching and
active intervention.
This methodology includes: watching and participation in the activities; interviewing the different users
of the space (health professionals, employees, hospitalized patients or outpatients and
visitors/relatives), Focus Groups and inquiries to the several groups of users.
As a result of this methodology it will be possible to draw the guidelines of the project of Landscape
Architecture, so that it may fulfill the users’ real needs and become an integral project, according to the
surrounding space and as an extension of it.
This study allows the Landscape Architecture to work for the community but through a methodology
which gives the opportunity to mix the project of a space according to the designer’s creativity with the
utility and adaptation according to the users’ approach.
The Medical Rehabilitation Centre of Alcoitão, where the green spaces are important to the patients’
rehabilitation and well-being, was chosen for this study case. The methodology tested in this place
may be an useful tool for the development of architecture projects of other spaces attended by people
with special needs.
