This chapter analyses the monetary evolution of the territories that formed the Portuguese Colonial Empire in the 1950s in the wake of their political decolonisation. Section 1 summarises the political evolution of these territories. Section 2 presents the monetary structure of the Portuguese Colonial Empire before decolonisation. Section 3 explains the different monetary paths followed in the wake of political decolonisation. Section 4 tries to make a preliminary assessment of the links of the monetary evolution with the economic and political evolution of the territories.
