Aromaterapia é uma prática que é usada desde à 6000 anos A.C. Tem por base o uso de óleos essenciais cuja composição, muito variável, é responsável pelas diferentes atividades biológicas e farmacológicas que lhes são atribuídas. Estes óleos essenciais são produtos de origem vegetal, extraídos geralmente por hidrodestilação, e nalguns casos especiais como no género Citrus, através de expressão. Podem apresentar diversas estruturas químicas, mas os principais compostos são de natureza terpénica, como os monoterpenos e sesquiterpenos. Este tipo de terapia pode ser aplicado por 3 vias, inalatória, tópica e oral, sendo que as duas primeiras são as mais comuns e a última tem grande destaque em França. Ao longo desta monografia vamos abordar os diferentes tópicos a ter em consideração quando se pratica esta terapia.

This type of therapy can be applied in 3 ways, inhalation, topical and oral, the first two being the most common and the last one being very prominent in France. Throughout this monograph we will cover the different topics to consider when practicing this therapy.
