Introduction: The body donation is the pillar of dissections of corpses that allows the teaching of anatomy in medical schools. Objectives: With this dissertation it is intended to make a narrative review on the impact and significance of donating the body to science, giving a special focus to the historical evolution of the body donations. Additionally, the main goal is to describe the profile of the body donors of the Instituto de Anatomia da FMUL. Methods: Between September 2022 and March 2023, an anonymous and consented survey was conducted to body donators of the Instituto de Anatomia da FMUL. Results: We had 31 filled surveys. The average age was 61,81 years-old and the female sex prevails. Almost the totality has Portuguese nationality and they live mainly in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. More than 50% is married and round about a fourth lives alone. The majority has finished the secondary education or has graduated and the most common occupations were administrative and technical and intermediate level jobs. More than the half claims to be catholic. The sources through which the potential donors collected information about the programs of body donations were the media/internet and a family member or friend. Contributing to the research and medical development was the most chosen reason for donating. At last, 86,2% replied that they had no family members who had been already donors in the past. Conclusions: This work enabled a reflection about the historical evolution of the body donation to science for investigation and teaching and, through a survey, profiling in a generic way the potential donor in the Lisbon area and determine which population is more motivated to body donations. The data collection could help directing the initiatives to promote the body donation and embrace a broader target audience.
