When analysing the current museological landscape, both internal as well as internationally, a host of issues were identified, in regards to the management of collections in institutions, as well as limited financial and human resources, collections abandoned in storage facilities, a necessity to increase or reorganize spaces and a generalised decrease in the acquisition of relevant objects. For that reason, in the last decades, there have been many discussions about the necessity to reflect upon the manner in which museums collect, through the development of accessioning policies.
This methodology is founded upon the principle of functional approach of the museum object, creating a distinction between the useful object, in which one may observe an equilibrium between the cost and benefits of its preservation, and the useless object, with a bigger probability of obsolescence, being abandoned in storage or deaccessioned from a collection. As a case study, we consider Associação Académica da Amadora (Amadora Academic Association)'s sports collection, acquired in 2014 by the municipal hall, with the purpose of being accessioned in the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia da Amadora. With a basis in work developed in regards to cataloguing this collection, we have developed a methodology which allowed us to know the characteristics of the objects that were intended for accessioning, as well as their impact to the museum's management, namely: the space as well as the necessary shelves for its placement; an identification of the state of conservation of the objects and the most urgent interventions of conservation and restoration; the average amount of time expended for each object, for future reference. Finally, taking into account the data extracted from the profile and impact of the collections, some selection criteria were debated, as well as a focus on identifying their main gaps, allowing the museum to build a more coherent collection with its mission, in a partnership with the sports community
