Il corpus della produzione teologica di Ildefonso, vescovo di Toledo (657-667), è ampio e affronta diverse problematiche: la sua opera piú celebre è il De virginitate beatae Mariae. È stato anche poeta. Testimonianze coeve attestano che egli ha composto un libro in prosa e in poesia, che conteneva epitaffi ed epigrammi di diversi generi. Questo libro è perduto e nessuno dei suoi poemi sopravvive. In realtà i componimenti attribuiti tradizionalmente a Ildefonso, alcuni dei quali sono stampati nella Patrologia Latina, sono stati scritti da Jerónimo Román de la Higuera (1538-1611), noto falsario. Questo contributo indaga i metodi utilizzati per costruire la collezione apocrifa di epigrammi attribuiti a Ildefonso e identifica l’origine delle false notizie contenute nel primo poema.
The corpus of theological writings produced by Ildefonsus, bishop of Toledo in 657-667, is large and variegated, and includes the very popular ‘De virginitate beatae Mariae’. He was also a poet. Contemporary evidence shows that he even composed a book, partly in prose, partly in poetry, comprising epitaphs and epigrams of various sorts. This book is lost, and none of his poems survive. The epigrammatic poems traditionally attributed to Ildefonsus, some of which have been printed in the ‘Patrologia Latina’, are a forgery of Jerónimo Román de la Higuera (1538-1611). The purpose of this essay is to enquire into the methods used to construct this pseudonymous collection, and to identify the origins of the misinformation contained in the first poem.
