2+1=2 : um estudo exploratório sobre relações continuadas após infidelidade

A descoberta de uma situação de infidelidade representa quase sempre um momento-chave na relação primária, com fortes consequências para o casal. Apesar da ampla literatura sobre o assunto, escasseiam investigações que explorem os mecanismos envolvidos nas relações em que o casal se mantém unido após essa descoberta. Investigações focadas na gestão de crise e na tomada de decisão em permanecer na relação, por parte do indivíduo cujo parceiro teve um envolvimento extra-relacional, são especialmente raras. Esse é precisamente o foco desta investigação: explorar o momento da descoberta, os significados atribuídos, os fatores protetores e os obstáculos no pós-descoberta, o processo de tomada de decisão em permanecer na relação e o papel da rede social nos vários momentos. Para isso, recorreu-se a entrevistas semiestruturadas, com 14 pessoas de nacionalidade portuguesa, maiores de 18 anos, envolvidas numa relação de casal há mais de 18 meses e que vivenciaram uma situação de infidelidade, praticada pelo parceiro atual. Os dados foram analisados com recurso ao software QSR Nvivo for Mac 11.4.3, através de análise temática. Os resultados mostram que foram utilizados maioritariamente fatores relacionais para explicar a ocorrência da infidelidade, o que poderá ter facilitado que durante a gestão de crise cada membro do casal permanecesse mais responsivo às necessidades do outro, especialmente do parceiro traído. A evolução da satisfação relacional parece estar relacionada com a capacidade ou incapacidade do casal em trabalhar dificuldades da relação prévias à infidelidade. A maioria da rede social forneceu suporte social e/ou promoveu a manutenção da relação, embora a sua influência durante o processo deva ser objeto de estudos mais focados. Estes resultados poderão fornecer importantes indicações para a prática clínica com casais nesta situação, nomeadamente quanto ao papel do apoio social e dos diferentes fatores na tomada de decisão.
The discovery of an infidelity situation nearly always represents a key moment in the primary relationship, with strong consequences for the couple. In spite of the broad literature on the subject, studies exploring the mechanisms involved in relationships in which the couple stays together after that discovery are scarce. Studies focused on crisis management and on decision-making about staying in the relationship, on the part of the individual whose partner has had an extra-relational involvement, are especially rare. This is precisely the focus of the current study: Exploring the moments of discovery, attributed meanings, protective factors and obstacles in the post-discovery, the process of decision-making about staying in the relationship and the role of the social network in the various moments. For that purpose, we employed semi-structured interviews with 14 persons of Portuguese nationality, of at least 18 years of age, involved in a couple relationship for more than 18 months and who have lived through a situation of infidelity of their current partner. Data were analyzed with the software QSR Nvivo for Mac 11.4.3, through thematic analysis. Results show that participants used mostly relationship factors as explanations for the occurrence of infidelity, which may have facilitated that during crisis management each member of the couple would remain more responsive to the other's needs, especially those of the betrayed partner. Changes in relationship satisfaction seem to be related to the ability or inability of the couple to work on relationship difficulties previous to the infidelity. Most of the social network provided social support and or sustained the continuity of the relationship, although its influence in the process should be the object of more focused studies. These results may provide important indications for clinical practice with couples in this situation, namely regarding the role of social support and of the different factors in decision.
