Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw : a case report

Anteriormente apelidada de osteonecrose da mandíbula associada aos bifosfonatos, a osteonecrose da mandíbula associada a medicação (ONMM) é um efeito adverso de alguns fármacos (tanto da terapêutica anti-reabsortiva como da terapêutica anti-angiogénica) que, apesar da sua baixa frequência, está associada a uma morbilidade significativa dos doentes afetados, tipicamente doentes oncológicos ou doentes osteoporóticos. Este trabalho descreve o caso clínico de uma doente oncológica que desenvolveu ONMM no contexto de terapêutica anti-reabsortiva e anti-angiogénica, bem como a abordagem que pode ser feita neste tipo de situações, aproveitando também para rever os dados mais atuais da literatura.
Previously called Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ), the Medication- Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) is an adverse effect of some drugs (both antiresorptive therapy and antiangiogenic therapy) that, despite its low frequency, is associated with a significant morbidity in affected patients, typically oncologic or osteoporotic ones. This paper reports the case of an oncologic patient that developed MRONJ with a background of both antiresorptive and antiangiogenic therapy; it discusses the management of these sort of cases, while reviewing the most recent data available on the literature.
