Running is one of the simplest, most natural and accessible physical recreation activities for health maintenance and disease prevention, and the number of participants has been increased in Portugal over the last years. The purpose of present investigation is estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in Portuguese runners. Methods: The present investigation studied the primary (running, intensity and location of joint pain) and secondary (sex, age, body composition and menopause) characteristics of musculoskeletal pain in 387 participants aged â„ 18 years, using the Knee Osteoarthritis Pre-Screening. Sample was subdivided into runners (GP) and non-runners (GNP). Statistical analysis included measures of descriptive nature, Chi-square test was performed to examine the relationship through variables and T-student test and ANOVA to differences between groups. Results: 47,3% of the final sample has joint pain (47,5% are runners). The prevalence of chronic pain in runner was higher in lower limbs. Conclusions: The prevalence of chronic pain in runners is higher in the lumbar spine, hip, knee and ankle joints. There were statistical differences in pain region according to sex.
