Publicadas em 1669, as Lettres Portugaises constituíram um admirável sucesso livresco, marcando o gosto de uma época, e a história dos amores sacrílegos de uma freira portuguesa com um oficial francês cativou e continua a cativar leitores e escritores de todos os tempos. O mistério da identidade da freira, suposta autora, e o anonimato do destinatário e do tradutor das cartas manteve viva a especulação e o interesse por esta correspondência, permitindo o debate nacional e internacional durante longos anos.
Neste contexto, a tese «As Lettres Portugaises na Literatura Portuguesa Contemporânea: Reescritas» propõe-se estudar os diversos textos escritos a partir das Lettres na literatura portuguesa do século XX, sob a forma de traduções e reescritas, analisando as especificidades de cada um e o modo como se apropriaram do original, manipularam o texto, figuraram representações do mito, constituindo-se, simultaneamente, num corpus capaz de integrar e enriquecer o cânone. É essa a avaliação que será realizada ao longo do trabalho, a partir de um corpus configurado de forma inédita, fazendo dialogar textos genológica e esteticamente diversos. Assim, as duas Partes que enquadram os principais argumentos da tese demonstram que a questão da autoria ou da ficcionalidade do texto, actualmente ultrapassada e atribuída a Guilleragues, foi responsável pela apropriação cultural e literária da personagem da freira em Portugal, pela invenção da tradição mítica e pela proliferação de traduções, estudos, textos e comentários em volta da autoria portuguesa e dos traços de sentimentalismo lusitano presentes nas cartas. A reconstituição histórica do que poderia ter sido a vida da religiosa no convento da Conceição de Beja e a revisão do episódio amoroso, através de variadas reescritas, em diferentes géneros literários, na literatura portuguesa contemporânea também contribuíram, como fica demonstrado, para a sedimentação da figura de Mariana Alcoforado em Portugal.
Ainda que possam manter-se no âmbito da tradição mítica alcoforadista, estas reescritas forjadas a partir das Lettres apresentam novas perspectivas acerca do mito, diferentes pontos de vista e constituem outras interpretações, por vezes subversivas, que, questionando o cânone, fazem da obra um clássico.
Published in 1669, the Portuguese Letters were an extraordinary book success, defining the sensitivity of a time and the sacrilegious love story of a nun and a French officer that attracted and keeps attracting readers and writers of all time. The mystery of the nun’s identity, the alleged author of the letters, and the anonymity of the receiver and the translator of those letters kept the speculation and the interest in this correspondence, allowing the national and the international debate for a long time. In this context, the thesis "The Portuguese Letters in Contemporary Portuguese Literature: Rewritings" aims to study the several texts written from the Letters in the twentieth century Portuguese literature, translations and rewritings, analyzing the specificities of each one and how they appropriated the original, manipulated the text, figured representations of the myth, being simultaneously a corpus able to integrate and enrich the canon. This is the evaluation that will be done throughout the work, from a corpus configured in an unprecedented way, giving voice to genre and aesthetically diverse texts. Thus, the two parts that frame the main arguments of the thesis show that the question of the authorship or fictionality of the text, currently surpassed and attributed to Guilleragues, was responsible for the cultural and literary appropriation of the nun's character in Portugal, for the invention of the mythical tradition and the production of translations, studies, texts and comments on the Portuguese authorship and the trace of Portuguese sensibility in the letters. The historical reconstruction of what could have been the life of the nun in the convent of the Conceição of Beja and the review of the love affair, through various rewritings in different literary genres, in contemporary Portuguese literature also contributed, as shown, to the sedimentation of the role of Mariana Alcoforado in Portugal. Even though they may remain within the mythological tradition of the nun, these rewritings built from the Letters present new perspectives on the myth, different points of view and constitute other interpretations, sometimes subversive that, by questioning the canon, make the work a classic.
