dc.description.abstractThis theoretical-practical research focuses on tracing symptoms of alchemical origin within contemporary artistic practice. Alchemy, through symbolic and abstract agreements, is of interest in being tracked within the aesthetic universe, not only because it directly collaborates with natural phenomena and technological principles (which involves issues related to the relationship between man and nature), but also because it encompasses works that reveal the alchemical influence on the idea of transmutation—whether in formal, psychic, or conceptual signs manifested in the process and in the artwork. Furthermore, considering the theoretical nature of this research, alchemy emerges as a fundamental tool to provide a more authentic theoretical translation of the reactions and transformations that occur in artistic practice. The present research acknowledges and confirms that while there is an evident correlation between the two disciplines, it does not establish a direct causality that would compromise the distinct characteristics and autonomy of each discipline. With that in mind, the authors selected in this research are chosen and evaluated based on their empirical testimony within the intersection of these two human areas. It is important to note that this selection and evaluation do not intend to establish direct connections with theoretical frameworks, but rather to expose the fertile ground that exists within the pictorial universe. This research also relies on a set of literary works that mainly circumscribe reflections on this natural philosophy. These include Carl Gustav Jung's thesis “Psychology and Alchemy” (which provides a psychological framework), Juliana Alvarenga's theoretical work “A poética da Substância: Procedimentos da Alquimia em artistas contemporâneos” (assisting in Aristotelian philosophical analyses), Urszula Szulakowska's investigation “Alchemy in Contemporary Art” (exploring historical and aesthetic analyses), and James Elkwins's text “What Painting is: How to Think about Oil Painting, Using the Language of Alchemy” (that brings together an aesthetic and critical diagnosis of the direct relationship between alchemy and painting).pt_PT
