Resumo(s)
This thesis presents a study about the neighborhood “Bairro da Graça”,
which is located in the historical centre of Lisbon. This study aims to conduct a
survey of all the factors that influence and interfere with the use of public space. The survey conducted consists on: the historical context of the neighborhood, to understand how this territorial unit has emerged and which factors led to it; the study of the population, learning about the people that live in “Bairro da Graça”; the major traffic flows, both road and pedestrian, and their key points, understanding the dynamics present in the neighborhood; how the public space is used by individuals (residents and visitors) and what is the perception of the residents of this issue; and finally, understanding what leads this territorial unit to be “Bairro da Graça”. This survey results in a synthesis of what “Bairro da Graça” is and represents and the problems detected in the public space. To assist this analysis, this study compiles a research of some subjects like the City, Public space, Neighborhoods and Urban Design that are considered relevant to better link all the elements in the field of Urban Planning and Design. This study culminates with a proposal of intervention for a specific area of “Bairro da Graça”, the block bounded by the streets “Rua dos Sapadores”, “Rua da Graça” and “Rua Natália Correia”, in order to drive forward and improve the quality of the public space
