Abstract(s)
The present work is an integral part of the study plan of the Master in Laboratory Medicine by the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon and it is one of their main evaluation tools. It is divided in two parts: the first one is a professional internship report and the second a literature review – a monograph. In the internship report there is an inicial presentation of the laboratory where the internship was carried out and the different sections. The report intends to be a summary of the acquired experience throughout the internship period, describing biological products, assays, methodologies and laboratory equipment from the diferent sections and their importance in a hospital laboratory. It also refers to the adopted procedures in the laboratory concerning the internal and external quality control. The internship occurred from June 1st to October 12th 2021 in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Cuf Tejo Hospital in Lisbon. This laboratory is managed by Centro de Medicina Laboratorial Germano de Sousa. The sections of Biochemistry, Hematology and Microbiology will be presented in this report enlightening that Microbiology also had a component performed at the central laboratory from the Germano de Sousa group. On the second part of this work – the monograph – a literature review is presented regarding the following topic: Pathogenesis and diagnosis of the Epstein-Barr virus infection: the importance of viral latency. The Epstein-Barr virus is spread across the entire globe and since its discovery in the 60’s it still intrigues investigators and clinicians who study its effect in the human host. This work delves into the virus characteristics, the way it induces different disease outcomes, and the reason why not all infected individuals will become ill. It also addresses how the viral latency properties of this virus contribute for its propagation as well as how the infection is diagnosed. Finally, a conclusion and future perspectives section is presented, pointing to how we can control and treat Epstein-Barr virus infection.
