This report describes a trace and replay tool for PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) message passing applications. The implemented mechanism includes two distinct phases: the trace phase and the replay phase. In the trace phase, minimal information is stored in order to minimize the probe effect. Although minimal, the stored information is enough to ensure that, during trace and replay phases each process will consume the same messages, in the same order. This means that during both phases the causal order of communication events is equivalent and, consequently, the same race conditions can be observed. The described tool, AVTRPL ( Application Visualizer: Trace and Replay) is one of the components of a debugging tool for distributed message passing applications
