Na primeira metade do século XVII, o erudito espanhol Alfonso Sánchez escreveu um resumo latino da Peregrinaçam de Fernão Mendes Pinto que permaneceu inédito até aos nossos dias. Referenciado pela primeira vez por Francis M. Rogers, em 1966, o respectivo original foi entretanto dado por desaparecido. Neste artigo, anunciamos a descoberta de uma transcrição parcial moderna do mesmo texto e utilizá-la-emos para apresentar, pela primeira vez, o índice completo do manuscrito latino original. Simultaneamente, realizaremos dois inquéritos complementares tendo em vista reconstituir o contexto que terá favorecido o trabalho que Sánchez fez sobre o texto de Mendes Pinto: (1) o inventário de todos os dados disponíveis sobre a biografia deste latinista; (2) a análise do círculo de relações literárias em que Sánchez se movimentou e do modo como muitas das suas principais figuras partilharam um interesse comum pelos assuntos da presença ibérica na Ásia Oriental
During the first half of the seventeenth century, the Spanish erudite Alfonso Sánchez wrote a Latin summary of Fernão Mendes Pinto’s Peregrinaçam that remained unpublished until today. Francis M. Rogers reported it for the first time in 1966, but in the meantime the original manuscript seems to have been lost. We take this article to announce the discovery of a modern partial transcription of that text and to present for the first time the complete contents of the Latin original manuscript. At the same time, we will undertake two related inquiries in order to recover the context that might have induced the work that Sánchez wrote after Mendes Pinto’s text: (1) the collection of all available biographical data about this Latinist; (2) the examination of Sánchez’s literary circle and the way in which most of its leading figures shared a common interest on the matters of the Iberian presence in East Asia.
