| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation exposes and analyzes the public sculpture located in Barreiro. The dissertation is composed by two parts. The first one, has an expository nature, where the scuptures are identified according to their typology; authorship; date of inauguration; dimensions (approximate values); materials; formal description; location; biographical data of the author and the state of conservation. The second part of the dissertation, for a better approach to the group of public sculpture of Barreiro, was divided in three time periods of roughly twenty years and a final period of eleven years: from 1939 to 1959; from 1960 to 1979; from 1980 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2011. In each period, the group of public sculpture is analyzed in relation to its deployment, integration, recurrent themes and other issues raised by the sculptures. The dissertation also contains four chapters related to issues that are concerned to the central theme: the public sculpture in Portugal; brief analysis of the group of public sculpture in Barreiro; sculptural typologies in Barreiro, and brief history of the city, where are exposed historical facts related to the theme. These different chapters seek to make a complete and comprehensive approach to the topic. It belongs to the inventory all the works of sculptural character held from May 1939 and November 2011, held in civil ground in Barreiro, gathering this period an eclectic set of thirty works.
