Resumo(s)
Paleoart, as well as scientific illustration, have been important tools in translating
paleontology’s findings into a visual language, especially for the laymen, for nearly two
centuries. Nevertheless, a multidisciplinary specific knowledge that covers, among other
topics, anatomy, geology, ecology, and ethology is required to make the correct use of these
subjects. In order to facilitate their study, it was set as the goal of this work the elaboration
of a guide through case studies presentations in which the scientific researches and the
resulting reconstitutions of species of the class Reptilia are addressed. This dissertation that
emphasizes extinct species, especially those found in Portugal, also addresses the challenges
and difficulties of depicting species whose fossil records are incomplete or whose
phylogenetic classification is uncertain. Taking the scope of the theme into consideration,
this project was developed under the guidance of experts in the field of scientific
illustration and paleontology and it was also assisted by an expert on crocodiles. The
illustrations developed throughout this work required the use of different digital
techniques that varied according to the amount of scientific data available and the desired
finish for each species represented. Therefore, to meet this need, various software was used,
such as Adobe Photoshop, for the 2D imaging process in the sketch and painting steps,
and Pixologic Zbrush, for creating three-dimensional models. Unlike the paleoart segment
that relies directly on scientific research, the artistic part has a much more subjective
nature, which makes practically impossible the stipulation of rules, however, it was verified
from the results obtained during the dissertation, that certain techniques apply better to
specific contexts, facilitating the development of the paleoartist’s task, as well as making it
faster and more accurate.
