Resumo(s)

In order to understand how the public approaches and interacts with printmaking and the way it perceives the matrix and the print as the two key elements connected in the activity but also each one by itself, this study aims to explore printmaking’s links, especially in the chalcography traditional process. The analysis of printing and drawing shows that both have the same intuitive and conscious mental process as well as some similar physical movements when creating an image. Considering two moments to achieve a complete work of printmaking, one on the matrix and another on the print, this media can encourage artistic experimentation and develop a creative process, which occur in sharing knowledge (as it is given in the Sociedade Cooperativa Gravura, among other examples). The idea of series and the production of multiple images associated to printmaking do not constitute a contradiction to the idea of “aura” and the “unique value” of the work of art. In a public space, as an installation, printmaking can provide viewers an opportunity to contact and intervene, suggesting a kind of participation in the artistic field, capable of achieving particular reactions at the moment of unveil the print. In that way, this study presents two ideas of the collective approach to printmaking: one regarding the work process in a shared studio and another relating to the public reception, perception and involvement
