The object of the current work is to make a diversity study on the Portuguese Mainland’s rural areas, and is divided in three parts.
The goal and structure of the study are explained in the introduction. A bibliographic review concerning the concept of rural, and heterogeneity of rural areas is presented on the first part. Two criteria are used for the classification of rural areas: rural population density and the proportion of the active population working in agriculture. According to these, four types are therefore proposed and described: low density, agricultural, industry and services and urban. On the last part, the relation between some relevant variables is analysed for each of the four types, so that the rural dynamics, especially the relation with agriculture, can be understood.----------------------------------O presente trabalho tem como objectivo fazer um estudo da diversidade do espaço rural do Continente português e encontra-se organizado em três partes.
Na introdução são explicados os objectivos e a estrutura do trabalho. Numa primeira fase é feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o conceito de rural e heterogeneidade dos espaços rurais. Para o estudo da diversidade do rural são utilizados dois critérios: a densidade rural e o peso da população activa que trabalha na agricultura. Estes permitem delimitar quatro zonas: baixa densidade, agrícola, indústria e serviços e urbana, que são posteriormente caracterizadas. Numa última parte analisa-se, para cada uma das zonas, a relação entre algumas variáveis relevantes para compreender as dinâmicas rurais, nomeadamente a sua relação com a agricultura.
