Oncological diseases are one of the most prevalent causes of death in the world and the number of cases is increasing. In the case of women, breast cancer has the highest incidence rate. As the disease develops, symptoms appear and there are also adverse effects more directly related to the treatment that can compromise the quality of life of the cancer patient. In order to cope with these symptoms, patients look for strategies, namely the use of food supplements. The market for food supplements is growing and several studies have shown that they are a strategy widely adopted by cancer patients. In breast cancer, the use of food supplements exceeds 60%. It should be noted that some supplements can be of enormous help with the symptoms of the disease and also in relieving the side effects of treatments, and for this reason some of them are even suggested by the doctor, but they can also be contraindicated in some cases. It is therefore essential that patients make decisions that are guided by their healthcare professional. Their role is extremely important because, as well as being responsible for sharing beneficial information, such as facts that prove their safety and efficacy, they must also warn of the possible dangers associated with interactions with medication. Food supplements are over-the-counter, and patients often don't inform their team of healthcare professionals that they are taking certain supplements. The lack of communication between the patient and the healthcare professional can be worrying because there may be situations in which food supplements interfere with the therapy prescribed by the doctor. It is therefore important for patients to inform their healthcare professionals about the use of these supplements to ensure safety and avoid possible negative impacts on their health and quality of life.
