A dissertação é constituída por uma introdução e tradução anotada da tragédia Ájax,
de Sófocles. Depois de expormos as controvérsias suscitadas pela datação e de
referirmos, de modo muito sucinto, as inovações dramáticas atribuídas a Sófocles,
desenvolvemos um estudo com duas linhas de orientação, que têm em conta o duplo
movimento da tragédia: "Ájax: a queda" e 'Ájax, a reabilitação".
Nas notas, expomos os principais problemas de crítica textual, salientando as
dificuldades de leitura e de fixação de texto de alguns passos. Procurámos também
chamar a atenção para a expressividade do emprego de alguns vocábulos, analisando a
sua etimologia, de forma a realçar as metáforas existentes no texto grego, nem sempre
fáceis de transpor em tradução. Demos também bastante relevo às ambiguidades
semânticas, que conferem uma riqueza especial ao teatro sofocliano e, em particular, à
peça sobre que nos debruçamos: Ájax.
A bibliografia fnal está dividida em três partes: 1. Edições Críticas, Traduções e
Comentários; 2. Estudos; 3. Instrumenta. Com esta estrutura, que separa textos e
traduções dos estudos e das obras de consulta mais geral, como os dicionários,
pretendemos tornar mais perceptível o nosso método de trabalho.
This work consists of an intoduction and a commented translation of Sophocles' tragedy Ajax. In the introduction, we briefly present the controversies concenring the dating of Sophocles' life and work and the dramatic introductions usually attributed to the tragedian. A Second Part is divided in two main themes, "Ájax: a queda" and "Ájax: a reabilitação". In the commentary notes, we explain the most important problems concerning the edition and the fixation of the text. We also tried to analyze the etymology of some words and concepts, in order to emphasize the metaphors of the Greek text, which are not always easy to translate. The richness of the sophoclean theater also passes through the ambiguity of the text, which we also explored in the commentary notes. The bibliography is divided in three sections: 1. Edições Críticas, Traduções e Comentários; 2. Estudos; 3. Instrumenta. This structure aims to separate texts and translations from studies and general reference books, like dictionaries, in order to enlighten our methodology.
