In a decadent turn-of-the-century environment, the Vencidos da Vida marked the elite culture of the time in which they lived, with an attitude of defeatism that contrasted with the place they occupied in society. Through sources such as parliamentary debates, periodical press and literary texts, the focus of this work has an equivocal purpose: to carry out a prosopography and a culturally sociological study of this informal group of friends and to investigate extensions of defeatism in moments after the time of the Vencidos, moments of crisis in Modernity in Portugal, between 1888 (date of the group) to the beginning of the century XXI, trying to cover the long time, as this allows a better understanding of the problems. But also trying to understand what forms of defeatism took place and what debates it generated. The permanence of critical, positive and negative memories of the Vencidos da Vida by the Portuguese intelligentsia, draws attention to the uncertainty between pessimism and the conviction, belief and disbelief in the regeneration of portuguese society, in a constant dichotomy between end and recommencement. What arises is to consider defeatism as a moral problem, a political problem or a problem of faith. How do the meanings of “defeat” evolve after 1888? In what ways do the concept of defeatism end up asserting itself in the history of culture and mentalities? What debates raised these topics?
