Resumo(s)
The older population is increasing rapidly. Additionally, older adults use technology more frequently.
Due to this, applications are being developed with a greater focus on this target audience. If we want
to develop better applications for the elderly, we need better ways to evaluate their usability with them.
This thesis starts by reviewing the literature on current usability questionnaires and evaluation methods in the context of applications for older adults. We identify the main results of our research, draw
conclusions about them, and write a list of recommendations that we believe researchers could apply to
improve usability evaluations with the elderly. Based on these results, we then conducted a comparative
user study between SUS, PSSUQ, and UEQ to evaluate how each questionnaire performed among this
age group. Our findings for both phases show that some questionnaires could have the potential to be
adapted in a way that allows researchers to better develop and evaluate them for the elderly. They also
showed no major differences between SUS, PSSUQ, and UEQ. However, each has its positives and negatives that make them the best, or worst, in different circumstances, such as different types of application
used or different areas of research. This study allows researchers to understand the needs for the elderly
to use usability questionnaires in the best way possible and what are be the most useful questionnaires
among the existing standardised usability questionnaires. It also has relevant information for researchers
to understand their needs in case they are proposing or using a non-standardised questionnaire to evaluate usability among older adults, and identifies potential future work regarding analysis, definition or
evaluation of questionnaires that evaluate usability among this older age group.
