Guiomar Torrezão (1844-1898) foi uma das primeiras escritoras portuguesas a fazer da carreira jornalística e literária o seu ganha-pão. Desde os seus primeiros textos, é clara a sua intenção de construir uma voz firme e impositiva, que não sofra das (falsas) modéstias tão comuns a outras vozes femininas e que não se suplicie pela incipiência dos seus conhecimentos. É forte também a sua presença autoral, e óbvio o desejo de criar um espaço para si própria e para a sua obra entre a literatura e a crítica portuguesas. Neste artigo, procurarei explorar como, porém, esta ousadia profissional não se traduz necessariamente na subversão dos lugares-comuns que o meio intelectual português perpetua relativamente às mulheres, nem num desejo explícito e claro de lutar pela emancipação feminina.
Guiomar Torrezão (1844-1898) was one of the first Portuguese female writers to make a living out of her journalistic and literary career. Her intention of building a firm and imposing voice is clear from her first texts; a voice that would not let her fall into the (false) modesty so common among other female voices, or torture herself over the incipience of her knowledge. Her authorial presence is, therefore, strong, and obvious her desire to create a space for herself and her work amongst the Portuguese literates and critics. In this article, I aim to explore how this professional boldness, does not, however, translate necessarily into the subversion of common-place ideas held by the Portuguese intellectual milieu about women, nor into an explicit and clear desire to fight for female emancipation.
