O texto apresentado procura reflectir sobre alguns dos desafios por que passa actualmente o processo de integração na Europa, num ambiente de crescente Globalização que caracteriza a economia e sociedade dos nossos dias. São analisadas algumas das principais consequências que decorrem da prossecução dos dois grandes projectos em que estão envolvidos as países que constituem a União Europeia, num contexto que consideramos apresentar sintomas de alguma insuficiência teórica: Aprofundamento, traduzido na criação da União Económica e Monetária, e suas implicações sobre o Modelo Social Europeu, nomeadamente as que decorrem da adopção do Pacto de Estabilidade e Crescimento. Alargamento, traduzido na previsível adesão a União Europeia de alguns Países da Europa Central e Oriental, que implicara, necessariamente, entre outros aspectos, uma reforma da Política Agrícola Comum e uma redefinição das Perspectivas Financeiras para o inicio do próximo século
This Working-Paper aims to provide some discussion on the challenges faced by the European Integration, in a context of a highly globalized world economy. The european countries involved in the integration process are confronted with the consequences derived from the process itself, in a context, the authors believe, that lacks some theoretical consistence and guidance. The analysis is conducted in a two-way basis: - Deepening - which includes the constitution of the Economic and Monetary Union and its implications on the European Social Model; - Enlargement - reflecting all the advantages and contradictions of ·the future accession to the European Union of some Eastern an Central European Countries, and its consequences on important issues, such as the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy or the Financial Perspectives of the Union for the beginning of the next century.
