do nosso êthos.
esfera humana e a natural. Analisaremos pormenorizadamente a génese conceptual do
One of the greatest challenges of Environmental Ethics lies in reconciling man's creative freedom with respect for nature. This “reconciliation” is crossed by a dangerous and threatening tension between the transforming power of humans and the power of nature, which forces us to rethink the original soil where the meaning of our ethos is constituted. The main goal is to analyze this ethical problem from the aesthetic category of the negative sublime by Arnold Berleant: can a heuristic of the negative sublime experience translate into an ethical attitude of respect for the environment? First, I will think of notions of nature and environment, laying out how humans and nature, although familiarly strange, are rooted in a common ontological ground. Secondly, I will give an account of the critique of the dualism between subject and object evident in classical aesthetics, and characterize the aesthetics of engagement specificity as a correlate of the principle of ontological continuity between the human and natural spheres. Thirdly, I will analyze in detail a conceptual genesis of the negative sublime from Kant, Burke and Lyotard's ideas of the sublime. At last, I will seek to reflect on the articulation of the negative sublime aesthetic experience with its ethical dimension in the environmental sphere.
