Estilos Parentais (versão reduzida) (Pedro, Carapito, & Ribeiro, 2015).
marginalmente significativo) e no estilo Autoritativo.
This study focused on the childhood memories of mothers and fathers of school-aged children (5/6-12 years), regarding the parental practices of their own parents, and the parenting styles they currently adopted in their parental role performance. Considering the two dimensions under study, the aims were: to determine whether there are differences between the group of mothers and the group of fathers; to analyze whether there are variations according to the child’s gender; to explore the relationship between those dimensions. There were 143 participants: 80 mothers, aged between 29 and 53 years (M = 43.51, SD = 4.47), and 63 fathers, aged between 32 and 56 years (M = 45.39, SD = 5.60). Two instruments were used: the Portuguese versions of the EMBU - Memories of Parental Rearing (Canavarro, 1996) and the PSDQ - Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (Short-Form) (Pedro, Carapito, & Ribeiro, 2015). Sociodemographic information was also collected. The results showed that mothers and fathers differed in Overprotection (maternal and paternal, but in this case the result was marginally significant) and in the Authoritative style. In both groups, there were no differences in recalled childhood memories and in the current parenting styles, according to the child’s gender. Finally, in both groups there was a positive relationship between paternal Overprotection and the current adoption of an Authoritarian style, and in the mothers’ group a relationship between maternal Emotional Warmth and the current adoption of an Authoritative style. The results contribute to a better understanding of the studied dimensions, particularly their relationship, for which the literature is still scarce. These findings additionally point to the potential influence of parental practices experienced in childhood, on adulthood and on the performance of the parental role at the present time.
