Abstract(s)

The research approach the interconnection of the concepts of Sculpture and Environment, expanding them to the contexts of artistic practice, namely the new expanded fields, whether physical or sensorial of Sculpture. Due to the new relationships between space, place and viewer, the environment interacts with the space, bringing it closer to Installation. Starting from this premise, we investigated how both dynamics, by manipulating the physicality of space, summon a collective experience. In physical and sensory terms, is highlighted the importance of distinguishing matter and material as elements that modify the perception of interior and exterior sculptural space. The potencial emancipatory of the spectator's action is also enhanced, unleashing observation and action, explained by phenomenology, subjectivity and intersubjectivity, where a relationship is established between the work and its Atmosphere. In this analysis we approached the concept of Environment in two distinct ways: the physical immersion of the spectator in the work and the construction of a particular Atmosphere, created by a set of sensations acquired by those who experience them. In order to enhance the artistic ambit, the Environment is explored as an Atmosphere and a reflection of environmental concerns, through the analysis of works that use everyday materials, natural matter and Landscape. The bond between themes explained throughout the project work allowed the development of a set regarding self-referential sculptures and installations, that reference the interior space and exterior space. These studies, initially focused on a personal perspective, take on a collective character by involving the viewer with the works, due to the inherent environmental concern and the creation of immersive atmospheres.
