Estudo integrado da acção da Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa na repressão do
tráfico de escravos entre 1837 e 1904.
Neste trabalho analisa-se a distribuição do esforço fiscalizador em todas as
províncias ultramarinas e a evolução desse esforço ao longo do tempo, perspectivando-o
em relação ao poder naval nacional e à orientação do poder político, sem deixar de o
comparar – em termos relativos – com os esforços desenvolvidos por outras potências.
Pretende-se, deste modo, não só caracterizar e enquadrar a acção repressiva da
Marinha nacional, mas também o contributo de Portugal para a erradicação do comércio
esclavagista mundial.
Overview on the repression of the slave trade by the Portuguese Navy between 1837 and 1904. In our research, we will analyse the spread of the global effort to all the Portuguese colonies and its evolution along the period of interest. This action is then put into perspective, regarding the evolution of the national naval power and the political orientation, while being compared to the efforts made by other western powers. This way, we’ll try to frame and characterize the repressive action of the Navy, as well as the Portuguese contribution to the extintion of the global slave trade.
