Resumo(s)
This chapter discusses how state power led to the emergence and reproduction of
a Portuguese national identity through the intertwined processes of external differentiation and internal (relative) cultural standardisation.
In the view stated here, national identy in mainly a product of the continuous deployment of state agency.
While dealing with a specific case, the chaoter tries to examine this case within a mor general framework, since the connection between state power and national identity is in no way peculiar to Portugal.
