The increase in average life expectancy over the last century has resulted in many people living
to old age, and, consequently, to an increase in the number of people with dementia. Dementia is a
degenerative disease that adversely affects a person’s memory, cognitive ability, communication,
mood, and behaviour. Pharmacological treatment approaches have had limited success, leading
to an increased demand for non-pharmacological approaches to aid the treatment of dementia,
such as Reminiscence Therapy. Reminiscence Therapy uses personal stimuli such as pictures and
sound to stimulate a person’s long-term memory. The KeepsakeBox platform stores information
about both caregivers and people with dementia, as well as about sessions that have been held. It
also allows Reminiscence Therapy sessions to be conducted using the information stored on the
platform (e.g. biographical information of the person with dementia).
In this work, we complement the caregiver portal of the KeepsakeBox platform by implementing the history of therapy sessions that have been held, as well as a module to view statistics
regarding sessions and people with dementia. The session history allows the carers of the person
with dementia to view their entire therapy process to date, and the sessions that the person with
dementia has had. The carers can also view the details of each session to help them review all the
session information in an easier and simpler way. The statistical information regarding sessions
and people with dementia allows the carers to view the number of sessions (positive, neutral and
negative) held and the topics covered. This information is essential for future sessions.
To develop our solution, we started by carrying out a requirements survey, which served as
a basis for the design of a prototype, and then the final solution. We took into account the ease
of use for elderly people to achieve a simple, useful and easy-to-use solution. The results of the
evaluation with caregivers were very positive, showing that the developed functionalities are easy
to use and meet the caregivers’ needs. We also found that the KeepsakeBox platform is easy to
use, and that caregivers would like to take advantage of this platform to help them conduct their
Reminiscence Therapy sessions.
