Resumo(s)

Estados de Tensão (Tension States) is a theoretical and practical dissertation with focus on the vulnerability of the sensorial perception when confronted with the manipulated moving image. The distortion of the timeline is a result of the command over the duration and the movement, with some reference to principles such as the misrepresentation of the logistics of gravity. «Suppose time is (…)» (Lightman, 1992, p.10) is the suggestion presented by the 10 videographic essays analyzed in this dissertation, each of them with a distinct alternative for perception: slow motion, freeze frame, reverse, questioning linearity, segmentation of time in the same frame... These circumstances make way for the investigation of sensorial perception mechanics, analyzing the value of the response to image and sound separately, so to understand the virtues of each one and conclude that they are intimately united with the purpose of creating meaning. This way, the connection between the media and the spectator acquires a heightened importance, due to representing the only way of comprehending the possibilities and limits of time manipulation. The moving image and its editing techniques assume a leading role for making this conceptual reflection real, in a sense that they create simbolic and intuitive ways through technique. The research on the importance of memory as an asset to the emersion on the experience provided by the moving image was supported on two names of reference: Bill Viola and Harold Edgerton. In addition to their studies on time manipulation through image, the work process as a moment of development and maturation of the technique, ideas and concretion is also highlighted. The fusion between intuition and order, or science with art, are themes present in these artists works. The reflection on the artwork brings together the concepts analyzed throughout the investigation, stressing their characteristics, that foster new paths, either because of the aesthetic and graphic sensibility, the short chapter-like format or the peculiar sound/image dynamic
