The Present Master’s Degree Final Project presents a proposal for the Rehabilitation of the main building of the National Museum of Natural History and Science in Lisbon, a building with four centuries of history and marked by several historical events. Currently (2022) this remarkable building presents a set of problems, such as the insufficient accessibility, ineffective circulation (both public and service) and the inefficient distribution of spaces on the several floors. These questions, along with their historical condition, justify the development of a rehabilitation proposal, as presented in this project. In the context of the development of this proposal, there were applied and consolidated specific skills that were acquired throughout the academic path, such as the “theory of values”, and, on the other hand, there was also the opportunity to acquire and develop new skills corresponding to analyses, comparisons, and interviews. Considering the constant transformation of buildings, as the history of this building itself, it was decided to divide the rehabilitation proposal into two “levels”. The first “level” refers to “permanent actions”, linked to the requalification of circulation areas and programmatic (re)distribution. The second “level” corresponds to “reversible actions”, corresponding to the definition and qualification of the interior spaces, based on the use of a fixed furniture system, but with reversible installation and whose sizing and metric followed the “palm span” system with which the building was rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century.
