Toxocara cati e Ancylostoma tubaeforme.
ABSTRACT - Gastrointestinal parasitosis and deworming frequency for dogs and cats in the district of Sintra - The main goal of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitic diseases of dogs and cats in the Sintra district in general, as well as, in the dog and cat shelter of this district, in particular. We also intend to get to know the regular practices of deworming and whether or not the owners follow the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP) guidelines. The used methods were the fecal fluctuation, using the McMaster slide, and a survey of animal owners. The results indicate a global prevalence of 3% (2/66) of gastrointestinal parasitic disease in dogs, the positive samples being Toxocara canis (1.5%) and Ancylostoma caninum (1.5%), while for the cats the global prevalence was 3.9% (2/51), in which all positive samples belong to Toxocara cati. On the other hand, of the 57 samples collected in the kennel, the global prevalence for dogs was 41.7% (15/36), divided in 30.6 % for Ancylostoma caninum and 11.1% para Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum. In cats, the prevalence was 42.9% (9/21), 9.5% for Toxocara cati and 33.3% for Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma tubaeforme. Of the 188 inquiries made, it was possible to assess that people who had cases of immunosuppressed patients in their household (43/188), only 16.3% (7/43) complied with the guidelines while 83.7% (36/43) did not. In the families where there were no cases of immunosuppression (145/188), 53.8% (78/145) followed the guidelines and 46.2% (67/145) did not.
