O seguinte relatório aborda as dificuldades em efetuar uma tradução parcial da
obra Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic – A Centennial Reappraisal, uma obra sobre
os mais variados temas relacionados com o Titanic.
O objetivo do relatório consiste em descrever os problemas mais frequentes na
tradução desta obra, seja por questões provocadas por diferenças entre as culturas de
partida de chegada ou por questões relacionadas com a terminologia inerente à indústria
naval e à área náutica.
O relatório começa com uma introdução que fala superficialmente sobre o
Titanic e o lugar que este ocupa na cultura geral de hoje em dia, antes de falar um pouco
sobre a obra traduzida parcialmente para este relatório (num anexo não disponível para
consulta) terminando com uma descrição do relatório e das suas secções.
A primeira secção apresenta a obra e os seus autores, o texto técnico e os tipos
de texto encontrado na obra, incluindo excertos da mesma como exemplos e referindo
por que motivo eles se enquadram num determinado tipo de texto.
A segunda secção aborda a questão da tradução em geral e das estratégias a
utilizar quando a mesma é realizada.
A terceira secção dedica-se a questões culturais levantadas pela tradução
abordada neste relatório e das estratégias utilizadas para lidar com elas.
A quarta secção questões lexicais levantadas pela mesma tradução, e novamente
das estratégias usadas para lidar com elas. Esta última secção inclui um glossário
enquanto anexo.
A quinta e última secção faz uma avaliação geral do projeto e do que foi o
resultado final do mesmo, antes de o relatório terminar com uma indicação da
bibliografia consultada.
The following report tackles the difficulties in making a partial translation of the work Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic – A Centennial Reappraisal, a work about the most various subjects related to the Titanic. The goal of the report lies in describing the most frequent problems in the translation of this work, whether it is for issues related to differences between the source and target cultures or for issues related to terminology inherent to naval industry and the nautical field. The report begins with an introduction that superficially talks about the Titanic and the spot it fills in today’s general knowledge, before talking a bit about the work partially translated for this report (in an appendix unavailable for viewing), ending with a description of the report and its sections. The first section presents the work, its authors, technical text and the kinds of text found in the afore-mentioned work, including excerpts from it as examples and referring why they fit into a certain kind of text. The second section tackles the issue of translation in general and the strategies to use when it is made. The third section is about cultural issues raised by the translation tackled in this report and the strategies used to deal with them. The fourth section addresses lexical issues raised by the same translation, and again of the strategies used to deal with them. This last section includes a glossary as an appendix. The fifth and last section makes a general appraisal of the project and what was its final result, before the report ends with an indication of the bibliography viewed.
