| dc.description.abstract | Este estudo analisa as representações inglesas relativas à expansão ibérica na América na primeira metade do século XVII. O objetivo passa por perceber como é que os autores ingleses retrataram e refletiram sobre a atuação ibérica nesse período, e esclarecer os eventuais contrastes entre os métodos ingleses na exploração transatlântica e os processos da expansão portuguesa e castelhana, em particular nas Américas, tendo em conta a pluralidade do espaço geográfico da Monarquia Hispânica durante a União Ibérica. Seria a disparidade entre as atuações destes rivais assim tão excessiva? Considerando as dissemelhanças confessionais e culturais dos autores em contraste com as do catolicismo, iremos observar como estas acabam por ter um enorme peso na interpretação das ações ibéricas. A literatura inglesa que resulta daí transformou-se em propaganda a disseminar pelos mundos anglófono e europeu, tendo como objetivo motivar novos exploradores e denegrir os concorrentes ibéricos. De igual forma, será relevante notar as críticas que os autores ingleses apresentam sobre a agressividade e ganância apresentada nas Américas pelos católicos, mas, por outro lado, até que ponto os viam como um exemplo a seguir na sua difusão pelo Novo Mundo. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | This study analyses the English representations of the Iberian expansion in America in the first half of the 17th century. The aim is to understand how the English authors portrayed and reflected upon the Iberian activity in that period, and to highlight the contrasts between the English methods in transatlantic exploration and Portuguese and Castilian expansion processes, particularly in the Americas, taking into account the plurality of the geographic space of the Hispanic Monarchy during the Iberian Union. Was the disparity between the performances of these rivals so excessive? Considering the confessional and cultural dissimilarities of these authors in contrast to those of Catholicism, we will observe how these end up having an enormous weight in the interpretation of Iberian actions. The resulting English literature became propaganda to be disseminated throughout the English-speaking and the European worlds, with the aim of motivating new explorers and denigrating the Iberian competitors. Likewise, it will be relevant to note the criticisms that the English authors present regarding the aggressiveness and greed of the Catholics in the Americas but, on the other hand, to what extent did they see them as an example to be followed in their diffusion throughout the New World. | pt_PT |
