Technocracy is a multidimensional concept which encompasses different types (Caramani 2017). In this chapter we focus on citizens of Eurozone countries and their preferences for “systemic” technocracy. Systemic technocracy refers to the process whereby non-elected or apolitical agencies displace representative and political institutions in decision-making processes. Thus, we seek to examine the degree to which decision-making processes are “depoliticized”—i.e. not submitted to a public confrontation of alternatives and, ultimately, a direct or indirect electoral choice. In particular, we are interested in the way the European Union (EU) has depoliticized economic decision making in the Eurozone.pt_PT
