dc.description.abstractThis work aims to analyze the use of the internet by young people: contact with others online, online intimacy relationships, dependence on social networks, screen time and social conflicts caused by excessive online time, identifying relationships, comparing genders and school grade (age proxy) and identifying regional situations and needs. A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (52.7% females) attending the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades in mainland Portugal were enrolled in the study of Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC). Gender, grade and Regions’ differences were identified. The female gender uses more of the new technologies to get in touch and to create social networks. The male gender is more likely to create conflicts associated with the use of technologies. In the dimensions considered the youngest tend to use the internet and the social networks more frequently than the older ones. It is noted that in several of the measures the region Centro, compared to the Alentejo region, seems to have a more moderate use. The internet brings with it numerous advantages that one must know how to take advantage, avoiding unsafe or abusive uses or even the development of dependencies. The development of socio-emotional skills, self-regulation, and interpersonal relationships and social support, the search for alternatives to leisure and socialization without being via the Internet, are factors linked to the protection of the quality of life, well-being and mental health of adolescents.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractPretende-se analisar a utilização da internet pelos jovens: o contacto com outros online, as relações de intimidade online, a dependência das redes sociais, o tempo de ecrã e os conflitos sociais causados pelo excesso de tempo online, identificando relações, comparando géneros e nível de escolaridade (proxy da idade) e identificando situações e necessidades regionais. Participaram no estudo 8215 adolescentes portugueses (52,7% género feminino), que frequentavam o 6º, 8º, 10º e 12º anos de escolaridade em Portugal continental, no âmbito do estudo do Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC). Foram identificadas diferenças de género, de ano de escolaridade e de Região. O género feminino utiliza mais as novas tecnologias para entrar em contacto e para criar redes sociais. O género masculino tem mais propensão para criar conflitos associados ao uso das tecnologias. Nas dimensões consideradas, os mais novos tendem a ser utilizadores mais frequentes da internet e das redes sociais que os mais velhos. Salienta-se que em várias das medidas consideradas a região centro, comparativamente com a região do Alentejo, parece ter uma utilização mais moderada. A internet traz consigo numerosas vantagens que é preciso saber potenciar, evitando usos pouco seguros ou abusivos ou mesmo o desenvolvimento de dependências. O desenvolvimento de competências socioemocionais, de autorregulação e de relacionamento interpessoal, suporte social, a busca de alternativas ao lazer e à socialização sem ser via internet, são fatores ligados à proteção da qualidade de vida, bem-estar e saúde mental dos adolescentes.pt_PT
