“Doença +” (n=9) e apenas 7,9 % como “Doença ++” (n=6).
Foi encontrada uma relação entre a classificação dos questionários e o diagnóstico (p=0,01;
ABSTRACT - Husbandry of New Pets in the Greater Lisbon Area - The husbandry of new pets is a subject rarely studied and the errors associated with it are the cause of the majority of the clinical series of these animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the husbandry practices of these animals in the Greater Lisbon area by applying questionnaires to the owners of exotic animals, clients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon (HEV-FMV-ULisboa). The responses to 76 questionnaires, subdivided into: mammals (n=48), avian (n=15) and reptiles (n=13) were studied. Subsequently, a scoring system was applied, classifying the husbandry into "Good", "Acceptable" or "Poor". It was observed that 15,8% of the sample applied a poor husbandry (n=12), 59,2% used an acceptable one (n=45) and 25,0% of the respondents applied a good one (n=19). After the scoring of the questionnaires, the clinical history of the animals included in the study was analyzed in order to establish a diagnosis: "Healthy", "Disease –" (disease not related to husbandry), "Disease +" (disease poorly related to husbandry) and Disease ++ (disease strongly related to husbandry). In the sample, 59,2% of the animals were classified as “Healthy” (n=45), 21,1% as "Disease –" (n=16), 11,8% as "Disease +" (n=9) and only 7,9% as "Disease ++" (n=6). A relationship was found between the classification of the questionnaires and the diagnosis (p=0,01; rS= –0,47), and the lower scores corresponded to a higher incidence of disease associated with husbandry. Since proper husbandry of the species is determinant in the healthy status and well-being of exotic animals, and considering that the results of the present study show that its application is far from the ideal proposed in the literature, it is intended with this master’s thesis to disclose the recommendations of basic husbandry of the main exotic species kept as pets and to promote the awareness and diffusion of the subject, not only to the owners, as well as to the professionals of the veterinary doctors’ community.
