A malária é um dos mais sérios problemas de saúde pública, sendo o principal responsável pela morte de cerca de um milhão de pessoas todos os anos em África.
O controlo da doença é prejudicada pela falta duma vacina eficaz e pelo aumento da prevalência de estirpes multi-resistentes do Plasmodium falciparum à maior parte dos fármacos. Isso quer dizer que as opções terapêuticas atuais estão a perder a eficácia, havendo uma necessidade de descobrir novos agentes e alvos terapêuticos.
Muitas plantas são utilizadas na medicina tradicional e têm tido um papel importante para a descoberta de compostos para o tratamento da malária.
Assim, esta revisão bibliográfica, aborda dados sobre compostos naturais anti-maláricos com uma atividade in vitro significativa obtidos a partir de plantas, baseando-se para tal em artigos de revisão e de investigação.

The disease control is hampered by the lack of an efficient vaccine, and the occurrence of multi-drugs resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to most of the drugs available.. It means that treatment options are burning out, and we need to discovery novel therapeutic agents and novel molecular targets. Many plant species are used in traditional medicines and have played a significant role in the discovery of lead compounds for the treatment of malaria. Thus, this review aims to accomplish a state of the art on natural compounds with relevant in vitro antiplasmodial activity isolated from plants.
