A China já se tornou numa das maiores economias mundiais nos últimos anos. Com a sua política externa mais assertiva a partir de meados da década de 2010, o governo chinês passou a adotar uma estratégia proactiva no reforço do seu estatuto internacional em termos monetários. O presente trabalho visa explicar os motivos e as estratégias chinesas em construir e utilizar o poder da sua moeda doméstica, o Renminbi (RMB). Esta pesquisa analisa os benefícios, custos e obstáculos no processo da internacionalização do RMB, bem como os esforços chineses na reforma do sistema monetário internacional, com o objetivo de diminuir a dependência dos países tradicionalmente industrializados. Além dos esforços que a China fez em promover o uso do RMB a nível regional, a iniciativa chinesa no estabelecimento da instituição financeira internacional e a entrada do RMB no cabaz de Direitos de Saque Especiais tornam a ambição chinesa na conquista do grande poder através da área monetária um facto mais convincente. O presente trabalho demonstra que o processo da internacionalização do RMB depende das considerações económicas e políticas do governo chinês, bem como do resultado de conflitos dos vários grupos de interesse domésticos em questão.
China has already become one of the largest economies in the world in recent years. With its more assertive foreign policy starting from the early years of the 2010s, the Chinese government came to adopt a proactive strategy to strengthen its international status in monetary affairs. This paper aims to explain the motives and strategies of China in building and using the power of their domestic currency, the Renminbi (RMB). This paper analyzes the benefits, costs and obstacles in the process of internationalization of RMB, as well as the Chinese efforts of in the reform of the international monetary system, in order to reduce the dependence of China on the traditionally industrialized countries. In addition to China's efforts to promote the use of RMB regionally, the Chinese initiative in the establishment of international financial institutions and the inclusion of RMB into the Special Drawing Rights basket make China’s ambition to achieve the status of great power through monetary affairs a more convincing fact. The present work identifies that the process of internationalization of RMB depends, finally, on economic and political considerations of the Chinese government, as well as the result of conflicts between various domestic interest groups.
