The main objective of the present work had been the exploration of music lyrics as a method with the potential to change the self-perceptions, analyzing the potential of creating intervention programms based on the analysis of music lyrics to apply to schools or institutions in order to promote social skills and enhancement of self-esteem of adolescents; also intends, to contribute to the creation of activities that can boost group sessions with adolescents with specific objectives, exploring the importance that music and lyrics can play for psychological counseling of adolescents. The investigation was conducted with a group of 9 female adolescents, aged between 12 and 15 years old, attending 3rd level education. It was used the Portuguese adaptation of the Questionnaire "Self Perception Profile for Adolescents" (Peixoto, Alves-Martins, Wood, & Monteiro, 1997) to evaluate three types of self-perceptions: "Social Acceptance", “Physical Appearance" and "Global Self-Esteem" and a questionnaire of satisfaction about the intervention program, developed by the researcher. There were significant differences in the "Global Self-Esteem", revealing an increase in positive self-perceptions in this dimension after the intervention. Furthermore, we found a high degree of satisfaction with the intervention and the perception that this was a time of learning and change, according to the feedback from the adolescents. The results allow a discussion on the potential of music lyrics as a tool to be used in intervention programs in several contexts.
